Turning Your Home into Your Resort

As the summer holidays draw slowly to an end, interior decorator and author, Tahn Scoon shares her tips on creating a resort-style ambience in our own homes…

Declutter

One of the reasons we enjoy five-star accommodation so much is that we’re not overwhelmed with clutter. We have less choice when it comes to what to wear, where to sit, which linen to use – which equates to less stress. We also have less housework, which equates to even less stress. Whilst you may or may not be able to afford a housekeeper, try to have a good throw-out and spring clean in preparation for your resort-style makeover.

Luxe Linen

All the best resorts and hotels pride themselves on the quality of their linen. Cotton percale sheets of a high thread count, Egyptian cotton towels and bathrobes – all in the freshest white of course. With the January sales on, now is the perfect time to update your household linen at discount prices. If you’re after the real deal though, many five-star establishments now sell their linen direct to their guests.

Fine China

It’s the smallest of touches that count. Serving yourself a quality loose-leaf tea in fine china elevates the mundane. Gift any mismatched crockery and replace with a classic tea set in white china. Again, the January sales may be your best bet – though don’t dismiss charity stores. I was once lucky enough to buy an intact white Wedgewood set for a fraction of the price new!

Decorate in Naturals

Materials from nature bring the relaxed, resort ambience right into the home. Think wicker bench stools, timber trays, displayed shells and sisal rugs. Keep it appropriate to your location though. A coastal home might suit a quality photographic seascape, but an artwork depicting a lakeside scene will work better if you live in the country.

Add Flowers and Foliage

Rather incredibly, Four Seasons in Paris has a million-dollar budget for flowers – and a celebratory florist in Jeff Leatham. Other world-class hotels such as Claridges in London and The Taj Mahal Palace in Mumbai are just as coveted for their Instagram-worthy centrepieces. A more modest bunch of blooms will still add beauty and life to any room in the home – and most importantly a sense of occasion.
